The New Skin Better Science Sunscreens….

Skin Better Science has just launched three new sunscreens and I want to give you a quick rundown. They all utilize the same AMP (Advanced Mineral Protection) technology. This technology coats the zinc oxide and titanium dioxide particles (to prevent a white cast) while providing beneficial antioxidant and blurring properties, (for even skin tone). All of these are 100% mineral, non-nanoparticle sunscreens that protect from pollution, high energy blue light and infrared radiation, 80 minutes water resistance in addition to UVA/UVB.

There are two new sunscreen lotions, a tinted and sheer formula. Both are oil free and don’t require shaking the bottle before dispensing. They contain antioxidants such as green tea, coenzyme Q and knotgrass extract. Panthenol for skin conditioning, niacinamide and glycerin for hydration. These lotions are suitable for both sensitive and post procedure skin. The lotions are also the best value at $75 for 1.7 fl. oz, (50 mL).

The Tone Smart Lotion provides SPF 75 PA++++ (highest PA rating possible) and contains 10% zinc oxide and 3.5% titanium dioxide. It is sticky/tacky when first dispensed, but a few seconds of warming it up in your fingertips makes it easy to distribute on the skin. It is less pigmented than the Tone Smart compact and provides less coverage than the compact. It leaves a dewy finish which doesn’t look shiny or greasy, (the compact has a matte finish). This sunscreen quickly became a favorite of mine because of the protection it offers and the dewy finish with a hint of color.

The Sheer Lotion really is sheer and does not leave a white cast so it is good for all skin tones. It provides SPF 70, PA ++++ with 10% zinc oxide and 3.6% titanium dioxide. The finish is matte. It is also a bit tacky at first and warming it in the hands for a few seconds makes it easier to blend.

The new Sheer Compact provides SPF 56 Pa+++ with 10% zinc oxide and 5% titanium dioxide. This formulation is exactly the same as the Sheer Sunscreen Stick leaving a matte finish. The only difference is packaging. If you prefer to have an applicator sponge on hand, you may prefer the compact. Perhaps a more important difference is that the stick is 0.7 oz (20g) at $55 , and the compact is 0.42 oz (12g) at $65. To me, it’s hard to justify the price.

Just for completion and comparison, I’m including the good old Tone Smart compact, also a favorite of mine. This one provides SPF 68 Pa++++ with 10% zinc oxide and 8.4% Titanium dioxide. This is the perfect sunscreen when I want a light even tan on my face with a bit of coverage. It provides a very natural tint, (more color and coverage than the new lotion). So for those with very fair skin, this will add visible color to your skin and for olive tone skin types, it will blend right in. It applies like a cream foundation and provides light coverage with a matte finish. This one is pricy as the compact gives you 0.42 oz (12g) of product for $65. It is a great sunscreen that works like a light bronzer/foundation but is not the most budget friendly of the line.

All of the Skin Better Science sunscreens are really incredible quality providing broad spectrum protection and now there are quite a few to choose from. I would say; choose based on your desired tint vs sheer, matte vs dewy finish and price. You won’t go wrong!
